What does it help with?

Students receive unlimited, on demand access to expert math tutors whenever and wherever they need help. Tutors can support students for one or more math homework problems, reviewing concepts, or preparing for a test. Students connect to tutors by taking a picture of the problem they are working on with the Yup app. Students and tutors work through the problem collaboratively using in-app text messages and drawing tools. Tutors help to build foundational knowledge and learning confidence throughout the session. Because tutoring is on demand and takes place within the app, students can receive guidance in study hall, on the school bus, on the couch at home, and even on the weekend with no advance scheduling, using their preferred method of communication.

What grade and age range?  K-12

Yup tutors provide support in any math subject from K-12. We typically recommend students be in at least the 3rd grade to ensure they have the requisite skills to use a smartphone and be able to text effectively.

Is this core/supplemental/special needs/extracurricular/professional development or what?

Core.

What subject, topic, what standards is it mapped to?

Any math subject up to AP Calculus AB. Yup tutors are well versed in Common Core standards as well as SAT and ACT Math.

What lesson time does it use?

Students can use Yup 24/7, 365 days a year, for as little or as long as they need.

What is the pricing model?

Yup unlimited homework help is available to families with an annual subscription plan. Unlimited access means that students can do as many sessions as they like, and sessions can be as long as they like. Compared to in-person tutoring options that are priced hourly, this can represent a significant cost savings while adding flexibility for busy students and their parents.

Yup also offers bulk licensing options for schools.

Are there services around it?

Yup provides students with Math Workbooks in the summertime.

What makes Yup unique?

Yup differs from other online and in-person tutoring options in a number of key areas:

  1. Students can reach a tutor at any time, whenever they are stuck or need additional support: in study hall, on the bus, at home on the couch, or even late at night or over the weekend.

  2. Tutoring takes place via text messaging supported by photo and drawing tools within the Yup app. Communicating in this manner increases the flexibility of when and where a student can receive help, and also provides help in the style in which students are most comfortable.

  3. Yup tutors help students to uncover problem areas and build long term conceptual understanding.

  4. Yup tutors help students work toward developing a growth mindset by using language that positively reinforces effort and thought.

  5. Yup tutors must pass rigorous subject matter and teaching ability assessments, and are continuously trained and monitored by fellow experts to maintain our quality standards.

  6. Yup reviews and analyzes all of its tutoring sessions to ensure data-driven decision making.

A description of the characteristics--how is it designed for user interface, user experience? What instructional design principles are at work here?

To start a session, a student uses the Yup app to take a picture of a math problem. An available tutor will review the problem, ask probing questions to determine where the student is having difficulty, and guide the student accordingly so that the student can learn and solve the problem. Yup’s secure app allows one-on-one messaging and whiteboard collaboration, enabling the student and the tutor to solve problems together in a virtual private classroom. The tutor has additional tools at their disposal to encourage and reward the student for their efforts in getting to the correct answer. Once the session is over, the student has the option to rate the tutor on the session, an important step in Yup’s quality control.

Teacher reviews:

“Our students are very used to having access to information immediately. When they have a homework question, they don’t want to wait until the next day. Yup provides that instant access, that instant response to their question. They don’t have to wait anymore!”
