Developed by Lexia Learning, a Rosetta Stone company, Lexia® Core5® Reading is a research-proven, technology-based literacy program that accelerates the development of fundamental through advanced literacy skills for students of all abilities in grades pre-K–5. Core5 helps students as they learn to read and later when they begin to read to learn, supporting them in preparation for college and career ready standards.

In Core5, students work independently on engaging activities that help enrich and improve their literacy skills. Built to meet rigorous content standards, the program is designed according to the latest education research, with dynamic and engaging content to motivate students and support self-directed learning.

The program offers true personalization to ensure each student receives the right level of instruction on different skills to achieve literacy success. Advanced students have the opportunity to accelerate beyond their grade-level skills, while struggling students are scaffolded with simplified assessment formats and explicit instruction.

Lexia Core5 is not only research-based, but also has research-proven results. Core5 is research-proven to improve reading achievement, validated by 18 externally reviewed research studies that meet the standards of evidence under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Core5 is web-based and can be used on any computer, laptop, or Chromebook and the Lexia Core5 app is available for iPad. Additionally, teachers can monitor class data through mylexia.com or with the myLexia app for any iOS device and Apple Watch.

Lexia is actively working to update the Core5 Android app so that it supports the Expanded 21-level version of Core5. At present, we do not have a firm release date we can share, but it is our goal to make the updated app available sometime in the 2020-2021 school year. We will communicate the release date as soon as it is finalized.

Core5 helps substantially reduce students’ risk for reading failure by utilizing personalized instruction to bring struggling students up to grade level standards while still being able to give accelerated and on-track students the instruction they need to thrive. Core5 provides explicit, systematic instruction through personalized learning paths and seamlessly adapts based on student performance, targeting skill gaps as they emerge and equipping teachers with the data and instructional resources, they need to personalize instruction for every student. Embedded assessment technology predicts students’ year-end performance and provides ongoing norm-referenced and actionable data to help teachers prioritize and plan instruction with the offline instructional materials.

• Over half of students (53%) who started Core5 working on skills two or more grades below their grade level substantially reduced their risk of reading failure, ending the school year working on skills in their grade level or above in Core5. Among these students, 63% gained two or more grade levels of skills in one year.

Support mechanisms:

Core5 is able to identify struggling students through proprietary embedded assessment technology and supports their needs with personalized instruction. If a student struggles in a particular Core5 activity, the program provides a level of scaffolding, removing some of the answer choices and stimuli on the screen. Once the student demonstrates that they understand the skill, they have the opportunity to try the activity again. If the student continues to struggle, the Core5 program provides explicit instruction on the skill and allows the student to demonstrate proficiency before returning to the original activity. As part of Core5’s blended learning model, a targeted, teacher-delivered Lexia Lesson® on the specific skill or sub-skill is automatically prescribed for the student and linked at the point of use in Core5’s educator reports. Lexia Lessons are scripted, explicit lesson plans that follow the gradual release of responsibility model, empowering a teacher or paraprofessional to efficiently and effectively address the student’s specific skill gap.

Lexia Implementation Support Packages help educators implement Core5 with fidelity while sharing instructional best practices. The packages include modules for teachers on data coaching and use of Core5’s targeted instructional materials, as well as support for instructional leaders with goal-setting, success metrics and analysis.

Lexia Core5 Reading supports educators in providing differentiated literacy instruction for students of all abilities by targeting the six areas of reading instruction through explicit, systematic, and personalized learning. The scope of the program covers phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, automaticity and fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Lesson time needed:

Lexia® Core5® Reading has flexible implementation options. The program can be implemented as an instructional supplement to the core literacy curriculum (Tier 1) or as targeted instruction or intensive intervention (Tier 2 and Tier 3).

Based on their risk level and grade, students are given individual usage targets (15-80 minutes per week) for the online component of the program. The time needed for Lexia offline instructional materials, including teacher-led lessons and paper-based practice materials, is variable depending on students’ individual needs. These offline materials can be implemented as part of classroom center rotations, during intervention blocks, or assigned as homework.

Licensing follows an annual subscription model. Options include per-student or unlimited school-wide with bundled implementation support packages.

With data-driven instruction, student performance data is collected in real-time through Lexia’s embedded assessment technology, Assessment Without Testing. This assessment feature provides actionable, norm-referenced and criterion-referenced performance data without administering a test. The data is correlated to and highly predictive of outcomes on DIBELS, AIMSweb, MAP, and other commonly used assessments.

Additionally, myLexia data reports provide educators with a Performance Predictor that informs them of each student’s chance of reaching end-of-year benchmarks. With this data, myLexia also prescribes the amount of instructional intensity required to improve any student’s likelihood of reaching their end-of-year, grade-level targets.
